Cat Sneezing Constantly: Causes & When to See a Vet

2 min readMay 9, 2026

An occasional sneeze from your cat is nothing to worry about. But when your cat is sneezing constantly โ€” multiple times a day, every day โ€” it's a signal that something is irritating or infecting their upper respiratory tract. Here's how to figure out what's going on.

Why Is My Cat Sneezing So Much?

Upper Respiratory Infection (URI)

The most common cause of chronic sneezing in cats is a viral upper respiratory infection. The main culprits are:

  • Feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) โ€” extremely common; once infected, cats carry the virus for life, with flare-ups triggered by stress, illness, or a new environment
  • Feline calicivirus (FCV) โ€” another widespread virus causing sneezing, mouth sores, and sometimes limping

Signs of URI include sneezing, nasal discharge (clear, yellow, or green), watery eyes, congestion, and sometimes fever or loss of appetite (Helps et al., 2005, JFMS).

Bacterial Infections

Bordetella, Chlamydophila, and other bacteria often occur alongside viral infections, making symptoms worse and more persistent. Bacterial infections typically produce thicker, colored discharge.

Allergies and Environmental Irritants

Cats can be sensitive to dust, cigarette smoke, perfumes, air fresheners, mold, and pollen. Allergic sneezing tends to be intermittent and tied to specific exposures, without discharge or other illness signs.

Nasal Polyps or Tumors

In older cats, nasopharyngeal polyps (benign growths) or nasal tumors can cause one-sided sneezing, noisy breathing, and bloody discharge. These require veterinary diagnosis.

Dental Disease

Surprisingly, tooth root infections (especially in the upper jaw) can cause sneezing because the roots of the upper teeth sit close to the nasal passages.

Foreign Body

A grass seed, blade of grass, or other small object inhaled into the nasal passage causes sudden violent sneezing, often affecting only one nostril.

When To Worry

Schedule a vet visit if your cat:

  • Has been sneezing for more than a week
  • Has colored (yellow, green) or bloody nasal discharge
  • Has reduced appetite or is losing weight
  • Has eye discharge or swollen, squinting eyes
  • Is congested enough to breathe with their mouth open (this is urgent)
  • Shows asymmetrical symptoms (only one nostril affected) โ€” polyps or foreign bodies often present this way

What To Do at Home

  • Keep nasal passages clear by gently wiping discharge with a warm damp cloth
  • Use a humidifier near your cat's resting spot to ease congestion
  • Reduce irritants โ€” switch to unscented litter, stop using air fresheners, avoid smoking near your cat
  • Encourage eating by warming food slightly to make it more aromatic
  • Isolate from other cats if you suspect an infection

Do not give your cat human cold medications โ€” many are toxic to cats.

Still Not Sure if Your Cat Needs a Vet?

When you're not sure if this is wait-and-see or call-tonight, Voyage AI Vet triages in under 2 minutes. Describe what you're seeing in chat, share photos of what you're seeing โ€” your cat's posture, any visible signs, and the affected area, or hop on a live video call if you want a second pair of eyes. Every answer comes with citations to the actual veterinary literature it's pulling from โ€” so you see exactly where the guidance comes from, not just a chatbot's word.
