Why Is My Dog Coughing and Gagging? Causes and When to See a Vet
If your dog is coughing and gagging, it can be alarming โ especially if it sounds like they're choking or can't catch their breath. While occasional coughing is normal, persistent or severe coughing always deserves attention.
Why Dogs Cough and Gag
Coughing in dogs is a reflex designed to clear the airways of irritants, mucus, or obstructions. Gagging often follows a cough when the dog is trying to expel something โ or it can occur on its own when nausea is present (AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines, 2019). The key is understanding what's triggering it.
Common Causes
Kennel Cough (Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis)
One of the most common causes, kennel cough produces a harsh, honking cough often followed by gagging or retching. Despite sounding terrible, most healthy adult dogs recover on their own within 1โ3 weeks. It spreads easily in places where dogs congregate โ dog parks, boarding facilities, groomers.
Tracheal Collapse
This condition is most common in small and toy breeds like Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, and Chihuahuas. The cartilage rings supporting the windpipe weaken over time, causing the trachea to partially collapse during breathing. The result is a distinctive "goose-honk" cough that often worsens with excitement, exercise, or pressure on the neck from a collar.
Heart Disease
Fluid buildup around the lungs from congestive heart failure can cause a soft, persistent cough โ often worse at night or when lying down. This is more common in older dogs and certain breeds like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Dobermans. It is often accompanied by reduced exercise tolerance and faster breathing.
Foreign Object
Dogs explore the world with their mouths. A piece of food, toy, or bone fragment lodged in the throat can cause sudden, urgent gagging and coughing. If your dog is pawing at their mouth or appears distressed, this is an emergency.
Other Causes
- Pneumonia โ wet, productive cough with lethargy and fever
- Allergies or environmental irritants โ dust, smoke, cleaning products
- Lungworm or heartworm โ parasites can cause coughing in infected dogs
When to Worry: Emergency Signs
Seek veterinary care immediately if your dog:
- Is struggling to breathe or has blue/purple gums
- Is coughing up blood
- Has suddenly begun gagging as though choking on something
- Is coughing nonstop without relief
- Shows rapid, shallow breathing at rest
- Has extreme lethargy alongside coughing
- Has not improved after 7โ10 days of kennel cough

What to Do at Home
For mild kennel cough, ensure your dog gets rest, stays hydrated, and avoids stressful situations. Use a harness instead of a collar to reduce tracheal pressure. Keep the environment free of smoke and strong odors. If symptoms persist beyond two weeks or worsen at any point, schedule a vet visit.
Do not try to remove a suspected foreign object yourself โ this can push it deeper. Go to an emergency vet immediately.
