What Is a Stroke in Hamsters?

The affected brain area loses function, often suddenly and dramatically. In small animals like hamsters, true strokes can be hard to distinguish from other neurologic problems like ear infections, head trauma, or tumors. Common Symptoms

Differential Causes

- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

- Keep food and water within easy reach. Place softened food or pieces of vegetables directly in front of your hamster. Use a shallow dish for water or offer water from a syringe gently.
- Hand-feed if needed. Many stroke-affected hamsters can still eat soft food (a smear of baby food, mashed vegetable, or moistened pellets) but can't reach a regular feeder.
- Keep them warm. A heating pad under HALF the enclosure (so they can move away if too warm) maintains body temperature, which weakened hamsters struggle to regulate.
- Reduce stress. Keep the cage in a quiet, dim area. Avoid loud noises and other pets.
- Don't force water down the throat — aspiration can be fatal. Offer drops at the corner of the mouth and let them swallow.

Recovery
Many hamsters that survive the first 24–48 hours do recover — sometimes substantially. Improvement timeline:

- Long term: A residual head tilt or mild wobble often remains, but quality of life can be good
