Bearded Dragon Metabolic Bone Disease: Signs and Prevention

Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is the most common preventable illness in captive bearded dragons, caused by insufficient calcium, vitamin D3, or UVB light — or all three. It causes soft, rubbery bones, limb deformities, jaw abnormalities, and eventually paralysis. Early intervention reverses mild MBD; advanced cases may leave permanent skeletal damage.

What Causes Metabolic Bone Disease in Bearded Dragons?

MBD in bearded dragons is a form of nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism — when blood calcium falls too low, the parathyroid glands compensate by releasing parathyroid hormone (PTH), which draws calcium from bones to maintain blood calcium. Over time, bones lose density and structural integrity.

The triad of causes:

  1. Inadequate dietary calcium: Insects like crickets and mealworms have poor calcium-to-phosphorus ratios unless gut-loaded with calcium-rich foods and dusted with calcium powder before feeding
  2. Insufficient vitamin D3: Bearded dragons require UVB light (wavelength 290–320 nm) to synthesize vitamin D3 in the skin — essential for calcium absorption from the gut. Glass, plastic, and most window glass filter out UVB completely
  3. High phosphorus diet: Excessive phosphorus (from too many insects or phosphorus-rich vegetables like spinach) inhibits calcium absorption even when dietary calcium seems adequate

MBD is also influenced by genetics, concurrent illness, and other husbandry deficiencies. Signs of MBD in Bearded Dragons

Mild to moderate:

  • Swollen or oddly shaped limbs
  • Lethargy and reduced appetite

Advanced:

  • Limb deformities — bowed, curved, or visibly misshapen front or hind legs
  • Pathological fractures from minimal trauma
  • Spinal curvature (kyphosis or scoliosis)
  • Muscle twitching or tetany (muscle spasms from hypocalcemia)
  • Hind-limb paresis or paralysis
  • Inability to raise the body off the ground (gravitational drag on weakened bones)

Severe:

  • Complete hind-limb paralysis
  • Inability to eat due to jaw weakness
  • Seizures (from severely low blood calcium)

An X-ray reveals decreased bone density (osteopenia), which confirms MBD even when signs are subtle.

Treatment and Recovery

Immediate calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation:

  • Injectable calcium gluconate for severely hypocalcemic or seizing bearded dragons (vet-administered)
  • Oral calcium supplementation: calcium carbonate or calcium gluconate liquid, 1–2× daily until levels normalize
  • Vitamin D3 supplementation (oral or injected) if UVB deficiency is suspected

Husbandry correction (the most important part):

  • UVB lighting: replace bulbs every 6–12 months with a T5 HO UVB bulb rated for reptiles (Arcadia or similar); ensure the basking spot is within 30–40 cm of the tube
  • Calcium dusting: dust all feeder insects with calcium powder (without D3 for daily feeding; with D3 2× per week)
  • Gut-loading: feed insects 24–48 hours before offering to the dragon, using leafy greens, squash, and commercial gut-load products
  • Reduce high-oxalate, high-phosphorus vegetables (spinach, beet greens) in the diet

Physical therapy: In animals with limb weakness or contractures, gentle range-of-motion exercises prescribed by a reptile vet can help maintain muscle function during recovery.

According to the ARAV Reptile & Amphibian Resources, 2024, mild to moderate MBD detected before fractures or paralysis develops has a good prognosis with corrective care over weeks to months. Advanced cases with established skeletal deformity have a guarded prognosis for full recovery.

When to See a Vet

Call your vet today if:

  • Your bearded dragon's jaw or skull feels soft or rubbery to gentle touch
  • Your dragon has swollen limbs, bowed legs, or an abnormal gait
  • Your dragon is lethargic, not basking, or not eating for more than 3–5 days
  • Your dragon's enclosure does not have a functioning UVB bulb or you cannot remember the last time you replaced it

Go to the ER immediately if:

  • Muscle twitching, tremors, or seizure-like activity
  • Hind limbs are paralyzed — your dragon cannot move its back legs at all
  • A limb appears fractured or at a clearly abnormal angle
  • Your bearded dragon is completely unresponsive or cold
