Bearded Dragon Toe Swollen: Stuck Shed, Injury, or Joint Disease?

2 min readOct 5, 2026

General guidance โ€” not a diagnosis. When in doubt, call your vet.

A bearded dragon's swollen toe needs a close but gentle look and a reptile-veterinary assessment if the swelling persists or the toe is painful. A ring of retained shed can restrict circulation, but an injury, infection, or joint problem may look similar at first.[1][2] Do not assume every swollen toe is shedding and pull at attached skin.

Red flags that need prompt help

Contact a reptile veterinarian urgently if the toe turns dark, cold, or dry; swelling is spreading; there is an open wound or discharge; the dragon stops using the foot; or it becomes weak or stops eating. Constricting shed can damage tissue beyond the ring, and trauma can also impair circulation.[1] A dark tip is not a cue to try home surgery.

For reptile owners

An article can't ask about your reptile.

Describe what you're seeing. You'll get a few follow-up questions about your reptile, then where it lands โ€” vet today, watch closely, or no visit needed โ€” and what to do at home meanwhile.

Look for a narrow band, then look wider

Photograph the whole foot and the affected toe from both sides. Check for a tight pale band of old skin, a snagged claw, an obvious wound, or multiple swollen joints. If several joints are enlarged or the animal is moving poorly, a local shed problem may not explain everything. The shedding-problems guide covers husbandry factors; the gout-signs guide explains one broader joint differential. Neither page can diagnose this toe from appearance alone.

Record recent shedding, enclosure humidity and temperatures, climbing surfaces, cage-mate contact, and appetite. Keep the enclosure clean and at the species-appropriate temperature while arranging care. Do not cut a band with scissors against the toe, tug on adhered shed, apply strong disinfectants, or give a mammal pain medicine. A veterinarian can assess blood supply, remove a constriction safely if present, and decide whether imaging or other testing is needed.[1][2] The clinical digit-swelling workup gives the veterinary perspective.

Frequently asked questions

Can stuck shed make one toe swell? Yes. Retained skin can form a constricting ring around a reptile digit and reduce blood supply, but injury or another lesion can also cause swelling.[1][2]

Should I peel the skin off? Do not pull attached skin or cut close to the toe. Ask a reptile veterinarian for help, especially if the toe is discolored.

Is a black toe an emergency? A dark, dry, or cold toe may indicate damaged tissue or impaired blood supply. Seek prompt reptile-veterinary care.[1]
