Canary Scaly Leg Mites: Crusts, Tassel Foot, and Care

Crusty legs need a closer look
Thick, lifted, crusted scales on a canary's legs or toes can be caused by Knemidocoptes mites, a condition sometimes called scaly leg or tassel foot. Merck specifically describes leg and toe crusts in affected passerines, particularly canaries and European goldfinches.[1] Do not peel the crusts or apply an over-the-counter mite medicine before an avian veterinarian confirms the problem.
Not every rough canary foot is mites. Normal scale texture changes with age, while pressure injury, infection, trauma, nutritional disease, constricting fibers, and a tight identification band can also alter a leg. The pattern, progression, underside of the foot, and condition of the bird all matter.
Check without scraping
Observe the canary on its perch before catching it. Compare both legs and photograph the front, back, toes, nails, and soles in good light. Look for raised or porous crusts, thickened scales, cracks, bleeding, swelling, redness, missing toes, a change in grip, favoring one foot, or reluctance to perch. Note whether changes are slowly progressive or appeared after an injury.
Check the cere, beak corners, face, vent, and other foot, but do not assume a canary must have the classic porous facial lesions often described in budgerigars. In passerines, the legs and digit surfaces may be the main affected sites.[1] Also look at every cagemate and record whether any new bird, used cage, perch, nest box, or show equipment was introduced.
Examine perch diameter, surface, cleanliness, and placement. The exotic-animal dermatology review lists pododermatitis among important avian skin differentials and notes that affected cage birds, including canaries, may have swelling and hyperkeratosis on the plantar foot surface.[2] That location differs from a diagnosis based only on raised scales, but owners may describe both problems simply as βcrusty feet.β
Do not pick at loose scales to search for mites. Merck cautions that leg skin scrapings in passerines affected with Knemidocoptes often cause hemorrhage and generally are not recommended.[1] A clinic can choose a safer examination or sampling approach.
Protect the feet before the visit
Keep the cage clean and dry, and replace abrasive, splintered, sandpaper-covered, or heavily soiled perches with stable, easy-to-clean perches of suitable varied diameters. Do not make abrupt changes that leave a weak bird unable to reach food or water. Place essentials where the canary can access them without climbing if its grip is poor.
Do not soak, scrub, clip, or peel the crust. Avoid petroleum products, cooking oil, essential oils, alcohol, peroxide, poultry powders, and dog or cat parasite medicines. Thick coatings can hide progression, contaminate feathers, and be swallowed during preening. Prescription antiparasitics require an accurate weight and an avian-veterinary plan; this article does not provide a home dose.
If thread, hair, or a band appears to constrict a toe or leg, do not tug or cut beside delicate skin unless you can clearly do so without injury. A swollen limb below a band can lose circulation and may require prompt professional removal. Photograph the band and tell the clinic before transport.
What the veterinarian will sort out
The examination will distinguish dorsal scale and toe crusting from a plantar pressure lesion, infection, pox-like growth, trauma, nutritional change, or band injury. The veterinarian may assess weight, nails, beak, skin elsewhere, perch use, diet, and flock exposure. When mites are strongly suspected, treatment is selected and dosed for the individual bird, with a follow-up plan to confirm that crusting and new scale growth improve.
Do not expect thick old material to vanish immediately. The key follow-up questions are whether new lesions stop forming, the bird grips and perches more comfortably, swelling or bleeding resolves, and other birds remain unaffected. Persistent or worsening changes should prompt re-examination rather than repeated unsupervised pesticide use.

When to See a Vet
- Seek urgent care for active bleeding, a black or cold toe, marked swelling below a leg band, inability to perch, or a foot caught by fiber or thread.
- Arrange prompt avian-veterinary care for progressive crusting, lifted scales, cracks, pain, lameness, or lesions involving multiple birds.
- Go urgently if the canary is fluffed on the cage floor, weak, not eating, breathing hard, or losing balance in addition to foot changes.
- Contact the clinic before scraping scales or applying any antiparasitic, oil, powder, or insecticide.

Can I use poultry or pet-store mite medicine?
Not without avian-veterinary direction. Products differ in active ingredient and concentration, and a small canary requires accurate weighing and species-appropriate prescribing. Do not improvise a dose from another bird or mammal.
Do cagemates need treatment?
They need careful examination and exposure review. Whether they require medication depends on confirmation of mites, contact history, and individual health; use separate tools and follow the veterinarian's flock plan.
