Cat Black Spots on the Nose or Lips: Freckles or a Lesion?

4 min readOct 10, 2026

General guidance โ€” not a diagnosis. When in doubt, call your vet.

Are these spots harmless pigment?

Flat black or brown spots on a cat's nose or lips can be lentigo, a benign pigment change recognized especially in orange cats. [1] A dark area that is raised, raw, crusted, bleeding, or interfering with eating should not be dismissed as a freckle. This guide helps you describe the change; it cannot diagnose a spot from its appearance.

The useful first question is not simply whether the area is black. It is whether you are seeing a color change in intact skin, material sitting on the surface, or a new lump or wound.

Color change, surface crust, or a lump?

Lentigo produces pigmented macules: localized areas of color rather than a mass. The lips, eyelids, nose surface, and gums are recognized sites. [1] Do not assume a spot must be dangerous because it is dark, or must be harmless because your cat is orange.

Look without picking at the area:

  • Apparently flat pigment: record its location and appearance. If it is new or you are unsure, send a photograph to your regular veterinarian and ask about examination timing.
  • Crust, discharge, or an open surface: describe that separately. Do not lift a scab to see what is underneath.
  • A raised area or swelling: treat it as a lesion requiring assessment, not as a cosmetic freckle. Our guide to cat skin lumps and bumps explains why appearance alone cannot classify a mass.

Many skin diseases resemble one another; history, examination, and selected tests are what establish the cause. [2] A photograph is useful for comparison but is not a substitute for that process.

A sore lip or gum with drooling, reluctance to eat, or obvious mouth discomfort also needs a mouth examination. Oral inflammation can interfere with eating and has several different causes. [3] You do not need to determine which one before calling.

What to record and what to leave alone

Take an overview photograph showing where the spot is, then a closer photograph if your cat tolerates it. Use similar lighting for later comparisons. Write down when you first noticed it and whether the surface, size, or surrounding skin seems different. An old photograph may show that the pigment was already present.

Tell the clinic whether your cat is rubbing the face, has discharge, is dropping food, or is eating differently. List creams or cleaners you have used, even if they were intended only to remove dirt. Do not repeatedly wipe, scrub, squeeze, or peel the spot. Avoid human skin treatments and do not force the mouth open for inspection.

Your vet may recommend sampling when a skin lesion is unusual or concerning; a biopsy is one possible tool, not something every pigment spot requires. [2] Ask what finding a proposed test is intended to clarify.

When to See a Vet

  • Contact your vet promptly if the area becomes raised, ulcerated, painful, repeatedly crusted, or noticeably changes, rather than remaining an uncomplicated color spot.
  • Contact your vet today if there is mouth discomfort, persistent drooling, reduced eating, or bleeding associated with the spot. Do not wait for it to look worse.
  • Seek emergency care now for difficulty breathing, collapse, or bleeding that will not stop. For bleeding from inside the nostril rather than a surface spot, see our cat nosebleed guide.

For cat owners

An article can't ask about your cat.

Describe what you're seeing. You'll get a few follow-up questions about your cat, then where it lands โ€” vet today, watch closely, or no visit needed โ€” and what to do at home meanwhile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are black freckles on an orange cat's lips normal?

Lentigo is a recognized benign pigment change in orange cats. That is a possible explanation, not confirmation that every dark spot is harmless. [1] Show new or uncertain spots to your veterinarian.

Can lentigo appear on a cat's nose or gums?

Yes. Those are recognized locations, along with the lips and eyelids. [1] Do not force your cat's mouth open to look for more spots.

Does feline lentigo turn into cancer?

Confirmed lentigo is not considered precancerous. [1] The important limitation is that an owner photograph cannot confirm the diagnosis of an unfamiliar lesion.

How is a freckle different from a black scab?

A pigment spot changes the skin's color; a scab is material on its surface. Do not scrape or peel an area to test this. Photograph it and let your vet assess anything crusted, sore, or bleeding.

Should I put cream on my cat's black nose spots?

Do not apply bleaching products, human acne treatments, essential oils, or another pet's medication. An unexplained color change needs identification before treatment, not a home cosmetic procedure.

What will the vet need to know?

Bring clear photographs, when you first noticed the spot, any changes, and a list of products already applied. Mention rubbing, bleeding, difficulty eating, or other new symptoms. An examination determines whether sampling is needed.
