Red Leg in Frogs and Amphibians: Signs, Causes, and What to Do

What is "red leg" in frogs and other amphibians?

"Red leg" is a clinical sign, not a single disease. It is a reddish or pink flush on the underside of a frog's thighs, belly, and feet, caused by congested, bleeding skin blood vessels, and it usually signals a serious body-wide (systemic) illness. In veterinary terms it is called bacterial dermatosepticemia; the Merck Veterinary Manual defines red-leg syndrome as reddening (hyperemia) of the belly-side skin that accompanies a systemic infection [1]. Some clinicians also call it "pink belly disease" [3]. Historically it was blamed on one bacterium, Aeromonas hydrophila. The modern, more careful view is that "red leg" is a general term for the reddening that goes with acute blood infection (septicemia), and that reddening can have several very different causes [2].

Why isn't red leg always a bacterial infection I can treat with antibiotics?

Because the redness itself is non-specific: it tells you the frog is very sick, not why. This is the single most important thing to understand. The Merck Veterinary Manual states plainly that belly-side reddening "is a nonspecific sign and may also occur with toxicosis, viral (ie, ranavirus), and fungal (ie, chytridiomycosis) infection" [1]. In other words, a virus (ranavirus) or a fungus (chytrid) can produce a red-leg picture that looks almost identical to a bacterial one. LafeberVet, a veterinary reference, likewise lists ranavirus and chytridiomycosis as differential diagnoses to rule out in a frog with red leg [3], and the Merck Veterinary Manual likewise names viral (ranavirus) and fungal (chytridiomycosis) infection among the causes [1]. Merck even notes that many past outbreaks called "red leg" may actually have had an underlying, undiagnosed viral infection [1]. Ranavirus infection typically shows reddened skin with pinpoint or "paintbrush" bleeding, often around the mouth or the base of the back legs [2].

This matters enormously for treatment. Antibiotics can help a bacterial infection but do nothing against a virus like ranavirus, for which there is no cure and no vaccine [4]. So the old reflex of "red leg equals Aeromonas, reach for an antibiotic" is outdated and can miss the real problem. Only a vet can tell these apart, usually with a skin swab, culture, and other tests.

What causes red leg, and why is my whole tank at risk?

Most bacterial red leg is opportunistic: the bacteria are already around, and they take over only when a frog is stressed or weakened. Aeromonas hydrophila is a normal inhabitant of fresh water, "commonly found in aquatic environments and... frequently isolated from rivers, lakes, seawater, and animals" [5], and it is even cultured from perfectly healthy amphibians [2]. It turns dangerous when the animal's defenses drop. A veterinary review notes these bacterial infections are often "secondary invaders following viral infections and mycotic [fungal] skin infections," or complications of injury in dirty conditions [2].

What lowers a frog's defenses? Poor water quality, wrong temperature, overcrowding, poor hygiene, being newly bought, and malnutrition. The Merck Veterinary Manual specifically flags malnourished, newly acquired amphibians kept in poor-quality water as most susceptible [1]. So finding red leg is really a signal to hunt for the underlying stressor.

The tank matters too. Bacteria in shared water, and especially ranavirus, spread between animals. Ranavirus passes through contaminated water, direct contact, and eating infected tissue, and it can survive in the water for weeks with no host at all [4]. That is why one sick frog can become several sudden deaths, and why isolating a sick animal quickly is so important.

What does red leg look like on a frog?

The classic signs are a red or pink flush on the belly and the undersides of the thighs and feet, along with a frog that is clearly "off." The Merck Veterinary Manual lists lethargy, wasting (emaciation), skin ulcers, and "characteristic cutaneous pinpoint hemorrhages of the legs and abdomen" [1]. Owners may also notice loss of appetite, sores, swelling or fluid build-up, and, heartbreakingly, sudden death, sometimes of several animals at once. Because ranavirus overlaps so closely, watch also for swelling of the limbs or body, fluid build-up, and bleeding toward the back end; in wild and studied outbreaks ranavirus has killed affected amphibians within 1 to 5 days, with tadpole and adult die-offs reaching 90 to 100 percent [4]. Those figures come from wild and research populations, not pet tanks, but they show how fast this can move.

Can I catch anything from my sick frog?

There is a small but real risk, so basic hygiene is essential. Aeromonas and related amphibian bacteria can infect people: a veterinary study notes that in humans these bacteria cause "not only gastroenteritis but also extraintestinal infections, such as wounds, cellulitis, and septicemia" [5]. Infection most often comes through cuts or broken skin. Always wash your hands after handling any amphibian or cleaning its tank [6]. Do not handle a sick frog if you have an open cut, and public-health guidance advises that young children under five, pregnant women, older adults, and anyone with a weakened immune system should avoid contact with amphibians altogether [6]. Keep tanks and equipment out of the kitchen.

What should I do right now for a frog with red leg?

Isolate the sick frog and fix its environment while you get to a vet; those are the safe, useful first steps. Focus on the stressors you can control:

  • Isolate the sick frog immediately in a clean, simple container, and quarantine any new arrivals away from your established animals.
  • Test and correct the water: use dechlorinated water, and check temperature and cleanliness. The Merck Veterinary Manual says a proper work-up reviews husbandry with "water testing, environment temperature testing, and assessment for overcrowding" [1].
  • Clean the enclosure and reduce crowding and other sources of stress.
  • Handle as little as possible; if you must, use clean, powder-free gloves moistened with dechlorinated water, because amphibian skin absorbs things easily.

What NOT to do: do not dose your frog with an over-the-counter antibiotic on a hunch. You may be treating a virus or fungus it cannot touch, and you will make a culture harder to read [1]. Do not ignore the risk to tankmates. And do not assume it is "just red leg": the label hides too many different, dangerous causes.

When to See a Vet

Red leg is an emergency. Contact an exotics or amphibian veterinarian urgently (they do exist) if you see any of the following:

  • Red or pink flushing on the belly, thighs, or feet, especially with lethargy or refusal to eat [1].
  • Skin ulcers, sores, pinpoint bleeding, swelling, or fluid build-up [1].
  • More than one frog sick, or any sudden death in the group, which can mean a contagious virus or bacteria [4].
  • Any frog that is rapidly getting worse; this can kill within days [4].

A vet can distinguish bacterial red leg from ranavirus or chytrid with a swab, culture, and sensitivity testing, and the right treatment depends entirely on that answer [1].
