Goldfish Ammonia Poisoning: Signs, Test Results, and First Steps

Treat the Water as Urgent

If your goldfish is lethargic, refusing food, spinning, or otherwise breathing or swimming abnormally, test the water quality—including ammonia—now. Ammonia poisoning is a water-quality emergency, and clear water does not rule it out.

Goldfish continually release ammonia as they metabolize protein. Uneaten food and decaying organic material add more. A working biofilter converts that waste into nitrite and then nitrate; overfeeding, overcrowding, a new tank, a stopped filter, or damage to the filter bacteria can let ammonia accumulate. Merck Veterinary Manual's professional aquatic guidance identifies high ammonia as one of the water-quality problems most likely to kill fish directly.[1]

Read All Three Measurements

Most aquarium kits report total ammonia nitrogen, or TAN. TAN combines less-toxic ionized ammonium with more-toxic un-ionized ammonia. The share present as un-ionized ammonia rises as pH or temperature rises, so a TAN result cannot be interpreted responsibly without the tank's pH and temperature.[2]

UF/IFAS notes that un-ionized ammonia is approximately 100 times more toxic to fish than the ionized form.[2] Merck's general freshwater-fish guidance considers a calculated un-ionized ammonia concentration of 0.05 mg/L harmful because it can alter gill tissue; these are broad fish-medicine values, not a goldfish-specific guarantee of safety or illness.[1] Any detectable ammonia still means the aquarium is out of balance and deserves prompt correction.[2]

Write down TAN, pH, temperature, nitrite, and the time tested. A single number after a water change may miss the earlier exposure, while a short record helps a veterinarian understand what changed.

Signs That Fit Ammonia Exposure

Ammonia damages gill tissue. Affected fish may become lethargic or lose their appetite; acute toxicity can also cause spinning, disorientation, or convulsions.[1] Rapid gill movement, surface gasping, clamped fins, unusual hiding, and loss of balance should all be treated as distress, even though none proves ammonia poisoning by itself.

Look at every fish, not just the sickest one. Several fish changing behavior together makes a shared water problem more likely. Also inspect the gills and skin for bleeding, excess mucus, ulcers, white spots, or fuzzy growth, because infection, parasites, low oxygen, and toxicants can overlap with a water-quality event.

Stabilize the Tank Safely

  1. Test before adding remedies. Measure TAN, pH, temperature, and nitrite. Test the replacement water too, because municipal or well water may contribute ammonia, and chloramines can release ammonia during dechlorination.[1]
  2. Reduce or pause feeding. UF/IFAS advises reducing or stopping feed while ammonia is present; uneaten food adds to the load.[2]
  3. Replace some water. For a tank, UF/IFAS recommends a 25% to 50% water change, provided the incoming water contains no ammonia.[2] Use properly conditioned replacement water and avoid a sudden temperature change.
  4. Protect oxygen and filtration. Keep aeration strong and confirm that water is moving through the biofilter. Do not wash biological media in untreated tap water or replace all of it during the crisis.

Do not chase a low pH upward quickly. Raising pH shifts more TAN into the toxic un-ionized form; Merck specifically warns that a water change can worsen toxicity in an extremely high-TAN, acidic system if that shift is not managed.[1] Call an aquatic veterinarian or fish-health professional for guidance if ammonia is very high, pH is low, fish are collapsing, or you cannot prepare safe replacement water.

A new biofilter is not an instant fix: UF/IFAS reports that it requires six to eight weeks to build enough bacteria to reduce ammonia and nitrite effectively.[2] Continue frequent testing while the tank cycles or recovers.

When to See a Vet

  • Your goldfish is gasping continuously, collapsing, lying unresponsive, or cannot stay upright.
  • The fish is spinning, disoriented, convulsing, or has visibly bleeding or severely damaged gills.
  • Multiple fish are distressed or dying, especially when ammonia remains detectable after corrective steps.
  • Abnormal breathing, appetite, skin, or swimming continues after water readings return to the appropriate range.
