Why Your Mouse Has a Bald Patch

But if the skin underneath looks completely normal (smooth, no redness, no scabs, no crusts) and your mouse is not scratching, you are most likely looking at barbering: a behavior in which a mouse trims the fur or whiskers off a cage-mate or off itself. What Barbering Looks Like

  1. Identify the barber. Look for the one mouse with a flawless coat and full whiskers [3].
  2. Ease the crowding. Fewer mice per cage lowers the odds of barbering, so give your group more space [5].
  3. Add enrichment and foraging. More to do means less over-grooming: one study found that an enriched environment "delayed the onset and reduced the prevalence and overall severity of alopecia," using rotated shelters, tunnels, chews, and varied nesting material [6].

Does Barbering Hurt the Mouse?

For a self-barbering mouse, the behavior seems to soothe more than harm.   • Open wounds, bleeding, or bite marks from bullying or fighting, or a mouse that is being actively harmed or cornered by a cage-mate.
  • A firm lump or swelling under the skin (rather than a simple bald patch) — this can be a mammary tumor and needs prompt evaluation.
  • Bald areas that keep spreading despite more space and enrichment, or fur loss alongside weight loss, hunching, or noisy or labored breathing.
