Parrot Cloacal Prolapse: Exposed Vent Tissue and Urgent Care

Exposed tissue needs help
A cloacal prolapse is tissue protruding through a bird’s vent instead of remaining inside the body. Persistent pink, red, swollen, dark, bleeding, or drying tissue at the vent is an urgent problem: keep your parrot quiet, prevent picking, and contact an avian veterinarian promptly. Do not push the tissue back in.
Appearance alone cannot identify the involved structure or cause. A veterinarian must assess stability, identify the tissue, and investigate the trigger; testing, reduction, and surgery belong in veterinary hands.
What owners may notice
The main sign is fleshy tissue extending from the vent. It may appear only after straining, retract, or remain out. Other warnings include repeated pushing, altered droppings, blood, abdominal swelling, weakness, or inability to perch.
Before handling, record onset, retraction, droppings, appetite, egg-laying history, and straining. A photograph taken without delaying care can document change.
Merck states that cloacal prolapse can occur in any bird that strains frequently and is seen in egg-bound hens and adult cockatoos, typically males.[1] That association does not mean every prolapsed parrot is egg-bound or that every adult male cockatoo will prolapse. The cause must be investigated in the individual bird.
Why it can happen
Straining is a pathway, not a complete diagnosis. Reproductive disease, passage of an egg, abnormal droppings, a cloacal disorder, a mass, and behavioral patterns may all be relevant. In a retrospective study at one exotic-animal specialty service, 43 of 1,137 owned parrots presented between July 2012 and January 2018 had cloacal disease; cockatoos presented with cloacal disease significantly more often than other psittacine groups, and affected cockatoos predominantly presented with prolapse of the cloaca itself.[2] Those referral-service figures describe that clinical population, not the prevalence in all pet parrots.
For hens that are weak, straining, or spending time on the cage floor, review the signs of cockatiel egg binding. Abdominal swelling or severe illness can overlap with egg-yolk coelomitis, but neither condition can be confirmed at home. Male parrots and parrots without an egg history still need a full assessment.
Protect the bird during transport
Call before leaving. If you lack an avian clinician, use this guide to find an avian vet and ask whether the nearest emergency hospital stabilizes birds. Do not delay urgent care for an ideal appointment.
Use a small secure carrier with clean lining; remove high perches if the bird is weak. Keep it comfortably warm, quiet, and dim. Prevent picking or trampling and transport companions separately.
Do not squeeze, massage, trim, puncture, scrub, or repeatedly touch the tissue. Do not attempt digital reduction, insert a swab, or apply hemorrhoid cream, disinfectant, oil, sugar, or prescription medicine unless the attending veterinarian gives a specific instruction for this bird. These actions can injure tissue, introduce contamination, or delay care.
What the avian vet may do
The first priorities are stabilization and examination. Depending on the bird’s condition, the clinician may recommend imaging, blood testing, fecal or cloacal testing, and evaluation for reproductive or other disease. Merck describes professional treatment that may include cleaning exposed tissue, removing necrotic or infected tissue, reducing swelling, replacing viable tissue, and using sutures or surgery when needed.[1]
Recurrence is possible when the driver continues. Merck notes that early surgery combined with behavioral modification may correct prolapse and help prevent complications; it also describes recurrence when a bird continues owner-directed mating or parent–offspring behaviors and straining.[1] Postdiagnosis management should be individualized.
When to See a Vet
- Pink, red, dark, swollen, bleeding, or drying tissue remains outside the vent.
- Your bird repeatedly strains, cannot pass droppings, or may be trying to lay an egg.
- Your bird is weak, on the cage floor, breathing hard, or unable to perch.
- The tissue is being bitten, contaminated, rapidly enlarging, or changing color.

Can I push a parrot’s prolapse back in?
No. Do not attempt home reduction. The visible mass must be identified, its viability assessed, and the bird stabilized; pushing it can injure tissue, introduce contamination, or conceal a condition that still requires treatment.
