What Does Red Staining Around a Rat's Eyes Mean?

That red-brown crust around your rat's eyes or nose is almost never blood. It is porphyrin, a naturally red pigment secreted by a gland behind the eye called the Harderian gland, and when the pigment-rich tears dry they can look alarmingly like dried blood [1]. Is the red stuff around my rat's eyes blood or porphyrin?

It is almost certainly porphyrin, not blood. Why do rats get porphyrin staining (red tears)?

Porphyrin overproduction is a general stress-and-illness signal rather than a diagnosis of one specific disease. Chromodacryorrhea usually indicates a chronic underlying problem, and common triggers include pain, disease, and restraint stress, with chronic respiratory disease from mycoplasma infection being a frequent culprit [1]. Stress alone can drive it. At home, a few clues also point to porphyrin over blood.
