Snake Swollen Jaw: Mouth Rot, Injury, and Emergency Signs

A swollen jaw or face in a snake is abnormal and should be examined promptly by a reptile veterinarian. Infection inside the mouth, an abscess, trauma, a foreign body, tooth-related injury, or infection of the jaw bone can look similar from the outside. Do not squeeze, puncture, or medicate the swelling at home.
When to See a Vet
Seek emergency care now if your snake:
- Is open-mouth breathing, gasping, blue or gray in the mouth, or producing bubbles from the nose.
- Cannot close the mouth, has active bleeding, or has rapidly increasing facial swelling.
- Is profoundly weak, limp, unresponsive, or unable to hold the head normally.
- Has swelling after a bite, crushing injury, fall, heat injury, or force-feeding accident.
- Has thick discharge obstructing the mouth or nostrils.
Otherwise, arrange a reptile-veterinary visit as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours. Snakes may continue to move normally while oral infection extends into deeper tissue or bone.

What to do before the appointment
Keep the snake alone in a clean, simple enclosure at the correct measured temperature range for the species. Replace loose substrate with plain paper so discharge can be seen and contamination reduced. Provide fresh water, minimize handling, and stop feeding until the clinic advises you; prey and forced oral manipulation can worsen pain or cause aspiration when the mouth does not close normally.
Do not pry the mouth open. Do not apply peroxide, alcohol, essential oils, human mouthwash, antibiotic cream, or leftover antibiotics. Reptile pus is often firm rather than liquid, so squeezing an apparent abscess is unlikely to drain it safely and may drive material into surrounding tissue.
Look without restraining the head
From outside the enclosure, compare both sides of the head. Note whether the swelling is centered on the upper jaw, lower jaw, lip margin, eye, or nose. Photograph it from above and both sides with an object for scale. Record whether the mouth closes evenly and whether there is drooling, bubbles, crust, bad odor, blood, missing scales, or a visible wound.

Check the enclosure and snake for parasites because snake mites add stress and may signal broader quarantine problems.
What can cause a swollen jaw?
Stomatitis, often called mouth rot, is inflammation and infection of oral tissues. Early signs can include redness, small hemorrhages, excess mucus, or loss of appetite. More advanced disease may produce caseous material, tissue death, facial swelling, or loose teeth. In reported pythons, ulcerative stomatitis was associated with osteomyelitis and septic complications, showing why a mouth lesion is not always superficial.[1]
An abscess can develop after a bite, puncture, retained tooth, prey injury, foreign material, or infection spreading from the mouth. Five boa constrictors with maxillary swelling were diagnosed with bacterial stomatitis and osteomyelitis; radiography and CT helped define the lesions, and treatment required debridement plus targeted antimicrobial care.[2] This case series does not mean every swollen jaw is the same, but it illustrates the need to assess bone.
Trauma, fracture, dislocation, burns, tumors, cysts, and nutritional bone disease are other possibilities. Metabolic bone disease can weaken or deform the jaws, particularly in species with inappropriate calcium, vitamin D, or UVB husbandry, but a soft or swollen jaw cannot be diagnosed from husbandry history alone.[3]
Swelling near the eye may arise from structures around or beneath the spectacle rather than the jaw. Subspectacular abscesses have been reported with ascending infection from the oral cavity in snakes.[4] Location changes the diagnostic plan, so a clear photo is useful but not definitive.
What the veterinarian may do
The reptile veterinarian will assess airway, hydration, body condition, oral lining, teeth, jaw alignment, eyes, and the rest of the body. Sedation or anesthesia may be safer than forceful restraint for a painful oral examination. Radiographs can detect fractures and some bone changes; CT can show the skull, tooth-bearing bones, sinuses, and lesion extent in greater detail.
Aspirate, cytology, culture, biopsy, or removed material may help distinguish infection from other masses and guide treatment. Reptile abscesses often require physical removal of firm material. Treatment depends on depth and may include debridement, pain control, fluid or nutritional support, and antimicrobials selected for the suspected organism and patient.
Bring husbandry details: species, current weight, measured warm and cool temperatures, humidity, substrate, water and cleaning routine, feeding method, prey source, last meal, last shed, recent moves, new reptiles, and prior medication. Separate equipment from other reptiles until contagious disease has been considered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a swollen jaw always mouth rot?
No. Stomatitis is common, but abscesses, trauma, fracture, foreign material, bone infection, nutritional disease, cysts, and tumors can cause similar swelling.
Can I drain a snake abscess at home?
No. Reptile abscess material is often firm, and cutting or squeezing can cause bleeding, deeper contamination, and pain. Proper removal and sampling may require anesthesia.
Should I feed a snake with a swollen jaw?
Do not force-feed or offer large prey before veterinary advice. Pain, poor mouth closure, and impaired swallowing increase injury and aspiration risk.
Is mouth rot contagious to other snakes?
Some underlying organisms or husbandry problems can affect more than one animal. Isolate the patient and do not share tools while your veterinarian evaluates the cause.
Why would the veterinarian recommend CT?
CT can define skull and jaw-bone involvement, hidden abscesses, fractures, and the extent of a mass more clearly than external inspection alone.
Can poor husbandry cause jaw swelling?
Incorrect temperature, sanitation, nutrition, or enclosure hazards can increase risk, but they do not identify the immediate cause. Infection, injury, and other disease still require diagnosis.
Will antibiotics alone cure it?
Not always. Firm abscess material, dead tissue, foreign material, loose teeth, or infected bone may require debridement or surgery in addition to targeted medication.
