Sugar Glider Crusty Ears: Mites, Infection, or Skin Disease?

Crusty ears are a finding, not a mite diagnosis
A sugar glider's ear margin may look flaky, thickened, ragged, scabbed, red, or crusted. Mites are one possibility, but trauma, bite wounds, bacterial or fungal infection, excessive grooming, and other skin disease can resemble them. The location matters: material on the outer ear is different from discharge or odor arising inside the ear canal.
Merck Professional specifically notes irregular ear margins or crusting of the pinnae from ear-mite infections in sugar gliders.[1] It also describes wounds, lacerations, opportunistic skin infections after trauma, and self-mutilation as problems in this species.[1] Those facts support a differential, not a diagnosis from a photograph.
Look without picking or probing
Observe the glider when awake. Note scratching, head shaking, rubbing, overgrooming, reduced appetite, unusual quietness, balance changes, odor, discharge, bleeding, and whether one or both ears are affected. Photograph the outer surface and margins without flash directly into the canal.
Do not remove attached crusts. They may cover inflamed or bleeding tissue, and picking can destroy diagnostic material. Never insert a cotton swab, tweezers, oil, or cleaner into the canal. A sugar glider can move suddenly, making a seemingly gentle home examination unsafe.

Review social and enclosure factors
Inspect the sleeping pouch, fabric seams, mesh, toys, and branches for rough edges, loose fibers, blood, or sharp hardware. Wash or replace soiled pouch material and keep the enclosure dry and well ventilated, but do not disinfect everything immediately if the veterinarian may need to assess parasites or infection.
Observe cagemate interactions. A bite or repeated grooming by another glider may create a one-sided wound. Do not assume every social contact is benign, but also do not permanently separate bonded gliders without a plan. If active aggression continues, use a safe adjacent setup and ask an experienced exotic veterinarian about reintroduction.
Avoid dog, cat, livestock, or over-the-counter bird mite products. Concentration, carrier ingredients, route, and species safety differ. Merck lists clinician-used ectoparasite options for sugar gliders, but a consumer article cannot turn those into a home dose because the diagnosis, body weight, product formulation, and exposure of cagemates and bedding all matter.[1]
What a veterinarian may check
An exotic veterinarian may examine the pinna and canal with magnification, collect a superficial scraping or tape sample, perform ear cytology, or culture discharge when infection is suspected. Sedation may be appropriate when safe visualization cannot otherwise be achieved.
The question is not only whether a mite is present. The clinician also assesses secondary infection, tissue viability, pain, deeper ear disease, cagemate injury, and an underlying condition driving self-trauma. Balance problems or head tilt change the urgency because the middle or inner ear and neurologic system may be involved.
A recent single sugar-glider case report described pruritus, multifocal hair loss, scaling, and redness caused by cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma; skin scraping did not show mites, and further cytology and histopathology were needed.[2] This rare single case does not make lymphoma a likely cause of crusty ears. It illustrates why a negative mite check or an unusual spreading lesion may require a broader workup.
Safe care while arranging help
Keep the enclosure clean, dry, and at the normal safe temperature. Replace an obviously abrasive pouch or sharp item. Minimize restraint and prevent cagemates from chewing an open wound. If active bleeding occurs, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze to the outer ear without blocking the canal, then seek urgent care.
Do not apply peroxide, alcohol, vinegar, essential oils, petroleum products, antibiotic ointment, or human ear drops. Do not bathe or soak the glider to loosen crusts. Bring photographs, the timeline, product packaging, details about new animals or bedding, and information about whether other gliders have signs.
If parasites are confirmed, treatment may need to address contact animals and the environment as well as the visible lesion. Follow the veterinarian's product and cleaning plan exactly; more chemical is not safer.
When to See a Vet
- The ear is bleeding, swollen, painful, foul-smelling, ulcerated, dark, or losing tissue.
- The glider has head tilt, falling, circling, seizures, breathing difficulty, or marked weakness.
- Appetite or activity drops, self-biting continues, or a cagemate is attacking the ear.
- Crusting spreads, recurs, affects other gliders, or fails to improve after the cause is addressed.
