Aquarium Fish Nitrite Poisoning: Brown Blood Disease and Urgent Steps

Treat high nitrite as urgent

Nitrite poisoning can make fish gasp, breathe rapidly, become weak, or die even when dissolved oxygen is present. Test the water immediately, increase aeration, stop feeding temporarily, and contact an aquatic veterinarian or experienced fish-health professional while you correct the system.

Nitrite enters through the gills and converts hemoglobin to methemoglobin, which cannot carry oxygen normally. This is why the syndrome is called brown blood disease.[1] A fish may appear oxygen-starved even when an oxygen reading does not fully explain the signs.

Test before treating blindly

Use a reliable aquarium test for nitrite and record the unit exactly. Merck states that normal nitrite in an established system is 0 mg/L.[1] Also test ammonia, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen because more than one water-quality problem may be present. If possible, confirm an unexpected result with a second test or a veterinary, aquarium, or water-quality service.

Do not assume every gasping fish has nitrite poisoning. Low dissolved oxygen, ammonia, chlorine or chloramine, high carbon dioxide, temperature problems, parasites, and gill disease can overlap. A delayed negative result cannot always reconstruct an earlier exposure after water changes, dilution, or treatment. Write down the timeline, recent test values, products used, fish added, filter cleaning, power loss, medications, and any dead animal or excess food in the system.

Stabilize the fish and the biofilter

Increase safe surface agitation and aeration. Minimize chasing and handling. Remove dead fish and obvious decaying material without dismantling the entire filter. Pause feeding during the acute event so additional waste does not add to the load; resume cautiously after water quality is stable and the fish are recovering.

A partial water change with correctly conditioned, temperature-matched source water can dilute nitrite. Test the source water and follow a reputable conditioner label. Avoid a sudden large change in temperature, pH, or salinity. Never add untreated tap water during an emergency; chlorine or chloramine can create a second toxic exposure.

Protect the biological filter. Do not rinse all media under untreated tap water, replace every medium at once, or shut off filtration and aeration. New tanks, recently replaced media, medications that damage nitrifying organisms, overcrowding, overfeeding, power interruption, and sudden increases in animal load can all leave nitrite production ahead of nitrite oxidation.

Chloride can reduce nitrite uptake in freshwater fish, but the amount required depends on species, water chemistry, and measurement units. Do not copy a salt ratio from pond production, channel catfish, or another species into a home aquarium. Salt can harm salt-sensitive fish, plants, and invertebrates and can complicate an already unstable system. Ask for system-specific guidance rather than guessing a dose.

Follow the trend, not one reading

Retest nitrite and the related water-quality values at intervals appropriate to the system and the corrective plan. Record results rather than relying on color-memory. A falling number is encouraging, but fish may still need time and supportive care after methemoglobin formation and gill irritation. Do not medicate the whole tank for parasites or bacteria merely because fish are flashing or breathing fast. Irritated fish can develop secondary problems, but an unnecessary medication may further disrupt the biofilter.
