Betta Ich (White Spot): Why the Spots Vanishing Doesn't Mean It's Over

Salt Grains on Your Betta
White dots that look like grains of salt scattered over a betta's body and fins are most often ich, or white spot disease, caused by the parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. University of Florida fish-health extension describes "small white dots, blisters, or salt grains on the skin or fins," usually preceded by irritation, flashing against decor and loss of appetite; when the parasite is on the gills only there may be no visible spots at all, and "gills will often be pale and very swollen" [1]. It is treatable — but owners lose fish by stopping treatment when the spots go.
The Spot Is the Stage You Cannot Kill
Ich has three phases: the feeding trophont on the fish, the reproducing tomont in the environment, and the infective, free-swimming theront — and only the last is exposed [1]. That phase "is unprotected and, therefore, highly susceptible to chemicals," while the trophont sits behind the fish's own epithelial tissue and mucus and the tomont behind the gelatinous wall of its cyst [1]. Merck's professional fish chapter agrees that encysted stages are refractory to chemical treatment [2].
A spot you can see is a parasite medication cannot reach; when it vanishes the parasite has not died, it has dropped off to encyst on your gravel and divide. A 2011 Genome Biology account records trophonts leaving the host within 4 to 7 days, then dividing into hundreds of tomites that become infective theronts within 18 to 24 hours at room temperature [3].
Gill damage is how ich kills. A 2025 study of experimentally infected goldfish found gill lamellae fusion, hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltration and necrosis, and reported a total mortality rate of 22.22% [5].
Temperature sets the pace. At 75°F–79°F the life cycle completes in about 3 to 6 days; at 60°F extension guidance spaces treatments 3 to 5 days apart, with a minimum of five treatments [1].
Ich, Velvet, or Columnaris?
Ich is discrete, raised, evenly sized — grains you can count. Velvet (Piscinoodinium) is finer and gold-brown, best seen under an angled torch beam; Merck describes its pathogenic stages as pigmented, photosynthetic, nonmotile algae that invade the skin and gills [2] — see betta velvet. Columnaris (Flavobacterium columnare) is bacterial: greyish-white patches, a saddle across the back or an eroding mouth. Merck's bacterial fish chapter notes mortality can be acute, and that by the time it is seen it may be difficult to control [6] — see betta columnaris. Ragged fin edges with no spots point to fin rot.
What to Do Tonight
Test the water first — ammonia, nitrite, nitrate. Ich does not appear from nothing; extension guidance lists new fish, substrate, plants, decorations or equipment moved between tanks as the route in, and adds ich may also be spread by aerosolization of water mist or spray [1]. Outbreaks may occur at any time, but "often appear when water temperatures are changing more rapidly" [1] — so hold a steady temperature in the 75°F–79°F band extension guidance uses for warm-water treatment [1], not the "cook the tank" figures circulated online.
Then treat on a schedule, not to a symptom: at 75°F–79°F extension guidance applies chemical treatments daily, with a minimum of 3 to 5 treatments required [1]. Use a product labelled for white spot and follow that label exactly. Merck notes such over-the-counter products "often contain formalin and malachite green and are effective but, because of regulatory concerns regarding the use of malachite green, should not be dispensed by the veterinarian" [2]. Merck lists formalin or copper as frequent drugs of choice [2], but copper carries a precondition, not just a dose: extension guidance says "NEVER use copper sulfate without first testing the total alkalinity of the water" and "Do not use copper sulfate if the total alkalinity is less than 50 mg/L" [1] — which rules it out of many small, soft betta tanks. Vacuum the gravel between doses [2] and quarantine anything new for 30 days minimum [1].
When to See a Vet
- Gasping at the surface, laboured breathing, or pale swollen gills — gill involvement can kill before body spots show
- The fish stops eating, lies on the floor, or cannot hold itself upright
- Spots keep returning after a full course of treatment
- Grey-white patches, ulcers or an eroding mouth appear alongside or instead of the grains

How long does it take to clear ich from a betta tank?
Longer than the spots last. University of Florida extension guidance puts the life cycle at about 3 to 6 days at 75°F–79°F and treats daily there, with a minimum of 3 to 5 treatments required. The Merck Veterinary Manual likewise advises daily treatment at warm home-aquarium temperatures (above 26°C is its example, not a cutoff), with three to seven treatments possibly required.
The white spots are gone — is my betta cured?
Not necessarily. The spot is the feeding stage under the skin; it leaves on its own schedule to encyst and reproduce in the tank. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes encysted stages are refractory to chemical treatment, so spots vanishing is a stage change, not a cure.
Should I crank the heater up to kill ich?
No. Temperature does drive the parasite — a 2015 study of an Australian isolate from rainbow trout measured a mean of 189 hours to theront release at 5°C versus 11.7 hours at 30°C [4] — but those protocols were not developed for bettas. Extension guidance treats at 75°F–79°F; hold steady there and ask an aquatic vet before a large thermal change.
