The Gold Dust That Can Sneak Up on Your Betta
Velvet is one of the sneakiest killers a betta keeper will face. Also called gold-dust disease, rust, or oodinium, it coats a fish in a fine, shimmering film that is easy to miss until the fish is already struggling. The good news: caught early and treated correctly, velvet is beatable. What Velvet Actually Is
Velvet is caused by tiny parasites called dinoflagellates. In freshwater fish like bettas the culprit is Piscinoodinium; in saltwater tanks a close cousin called Amyloodinium does the same job [1]. Signs of Velvet Disease
The hallmark sign is a fine gold, rust, or yellowish "dusting" or sheen over the skin and fins. It is subtler than it sounds — the best way to see it is to turn off the room lights and shine a flashlight across your betta at an angle [3]. Other warning signs include:

Why Velvet Shows Up — and Why It Spreads So Fast
Velvet almost always arrives on something new — a fish, plant, snail, or water added without quarantine. The parasite has a free-swimming infective stage that swims off in search of a host, which is why it moves through a tank so quickly and is so contagious in both fresh and saltwater aquariums [3]. It is also stubborn. How Velvet Is Treated
Treat on several fronts at once:
- Use an appropriate anti-parasitic. The treatments Merck lists as most effective for these parasites are chloroquine and copper sulfate [1]. Copper must be dosed carefully and its levels monitored — Texas A&M warns copper can cause dangerous oxygen depletion and is unsafe in soft (low-alkalinity) water [4]. A fish or aquatic veterinarian can guide the safest choice.
- Raise the temperature — carefully. The parasite's life cycle runs faster in warm water and slows in cooler water [4], so gently warming the tank (only if your betta tolerates it, and changed gradually) can push the parasite toward the free-swimming stage where medication reaches it.

- Clean up the water. Frequent partial water changes and gravel vacuuming remove parasites and cysts and lower stress [3].
- Consider aquarium salt cautiously. Salt is sometimes used as a supplemental aquarist measure and is thought to slow velvet's reproduction, but it is not a substitute for medication [2].
A big caution: medication tolerance varies between species, and copper in particular is dangerous to snails, shrimp, and other invertebrates — never dose a community or planted tank blindly. Because velvet hides in the substrate, quarantine and treat the whole tank [3].
Preventing Velvet
Prevention is far easier than a cure:
- Quarantine everything new — fish, plants, and inverts — for two to four weeks before it touches your main tank. This is the single best defense against a free-swimming parasite hitching a ride in.
- Keep the water warm, stable, and clean. Bettas are tropical; steady heat and good filtration reduce the stress and chilling that invite an outbreak.
- Minimize stress. Avoid overcrowding, acclimate gently, and hold your parameters consistent so your betta's defenses stay strong.

Velvet kills quickly. Don't wait if you see these red flags — contact an aquatic or fish veterinarian, or act urgently:
- Rapid, labored breathing or gasping at the surface, which signals the gills are under attack [3].
