White Fuzz Isn't the Whole Story
"Frog fungus" is what people search when they see something white, fuzzy or discoloured on a pet frog. The honest answer: at least three unrelated problems look like that, they need different treatment, and none can be told apart by eye — the most serious one, chytridiomycosis, typically produces no visible fungal growth at all. So the next step isn't a remedy off a forum; it's getting the animal sampled by a vet who sees amphibians.
Three Problems, One Search Term
Chytrid (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, or "Bd"). This fungus infects the keratinised cells of amphibian skin and causes illness by interfering with the skin's electrolyte balance [1] — not by growing anything you can see. During a laboratory outbreak among 98 commercially imported green tree frogs (Litoria caerulea), the signs recorded were listlessness, odd body posture and skin discolouration; the frogs that became ill had eaten significantly less about a week before those signs appeared, shed skin on more days in their final week, and lost weight over the preceding weeks [2]. A frog that is off its food, sitting hunched, or shedding more often than usual can have chytrid while looking nothing like "fungus".
Water moulds (Saprolegnia and relatives). These look the part: infected tissue is described as having a wet, cotton-like appearance [3]. But saprolegniosis is mostly reported as an early-stage disease, with relatively low reports in adults, where the most frequent incidence is secondary — to bites, abrasion or small wounds, or to another infection [3]. So fuzz on an adult frog usually means something else came first. The same pattern turns up in axolotls.
Not fungal at all. Normal shedding, healing wounds and bacterial skin disease — including red-leg — all get filed under "fungus", and each needs something different.
Why Only a Test Can Separate Them
Chytrid is confirmed by a skin swab sent for PCR, or by histology on tissue — not by looking. One negative swab is weaker evidence than owners assume: in oriental fire-bellied toads, animals called Bd-negative by conventional swabbing were still releasing zoospores into their water, and the authors advised testing an individual at least twice, several days apart [4]. Visible fuzz is a separate question, answered by sampling the lesion itself.
Treatment splits the same way. Antifungal baths exist, and itraconazole is the agent most commonly used [1] — prescribed and dosed by a vet. They are not benign: acute drug toxicity is documented in tadpoles and juveniles, a low itraconazole dose in one tadpole trial may have been associated with skin depigmentation, and no pharmacokinetic data exist to guide dosing [5]. Heat is the better-supported option in post-metamorphic animals [5], but the temperatures involved are a clinical decision, not a thermostat experiment. Improvised salt dips and aquarium antifungals kill frogs.
Quarantine Is the Part You Control
In one aquarium collection, newly introduced dart frogs were followed by sudden deaths among both new and resident frogs. Chytrid was found on histology, and quarantine with strict handling rules plus veterinary treatment eradicated it — the few deaths in the 18 months afterwards all tested negative [6].
So: quarantine new frogs away from your existing animals, keep separate equipment per enclosure, don't mix species or sources, and never move water or substrate between systems. Bd is also notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly the OIE), which recommends that imported and exported amphibians be screened for it [7]. Some jurisdictions add their own movement or reporting rules, so ask your vet what applies where you live — and never release a captive frog outdoors.
When to See a Vet
- Any white, cotton-like growth, ulcer or open wound on the skin — that lesion needs sampling, not a home remedy.
- Shedding more often than usual, or skin that has changed colour or thickened.
- Lethargy, a hunched or abnormal posture, trouble righting itself, or a frog that has stopped eating.
- A sudden death in a group, or new arrivals falling ill after being added — quarantine everything and call a vet the same day.

Can I treat frog fungus at home?
No. Antifungal baths exist and itraconazole is the agent most commonly used, but a 2010 review in Diseases of Aquatic Organisms noted acute drug toxicity in tadpoles and juveniles, possible skin depigmentation from a low itraconazole dose in one tadpole trial, and no pharmacokinetic data to guide dosing. Dose and duration are a vet's call.
Does raising the temperature cure chytrid?
That same 2010 review called heat the only well-supported treatment in post-metamorphic amphibians. But the temperatures tested sit above what many pet frog species tolerate, and "frog" is not one set of husbandry numbers — get species-specific parameters and let a vet decide.
Can it spread to my other frogs?
