The 3-3-3 Rule for a New Rescue Dog: What the Research Actually Measured

The rubric every adopter gets handed

Three days to decompress, three weeks to settle, three months to feel at home. The 3-3-3 rule is a rescue-community rubric, not a published finding — no study defines those windows, and none of the work below was built around them.

The first three days: what gets measured

Most of the stress your dog is shedding was loaded in the kennel, not your house. In one shelter cohort, dogs confined for their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd day had higher plasma cortisol than a group kept there more than 9 days, and first-day levels exceeded those of the same dogs on Day 4/5 [1].

Once home, the change shows up fast. In 31 Dutch shelter dogs wearing accelerometers, night-time activity and urinary cortisol:creatinine ratios were lower after adoption than in the shelter, and night-time activity was significantly lower on night 2 than night 1 — a "rebound of resting" [2]. So heavy sleeping on night two is something researchers watched happen. The reverse does not follow: nobody tested individual restless dogs, so a dog pacing all night is worth raising with your vet, not a documented warning sign.

The week-one risk the rubric skips is escape. A dog with no attachment to you can go through a door, gate or slipped collar. Sensible practice: two points of attachment on walks, a leash indoors near exits, a microchip registered to you, and no off-leash recall testing for months. Weeks two to six: the numbers do not land on three

In that same cohort, urinary cortisol:creatinine ratios — sampled on days 1, 2, 3, 7 and 12 and at 6 weeks — were significantly lower on day 7, day 12 and 6 weeks after adoption than on day 1 at home [2]. Body weight fell during the shelter stay; after adoption it was not significantly different at two weeks, and rose significantly only by six weeks [2]. In a second paper on the same shelter cohort, hair cortisol was highest after six weeks in the shelter, and lower at intake and at six weeks and six months after adoption [3].

None of those timepoints is three weeks — nobody sampled there, so the rubric's middle number is unsupported rather than disproven. History may matter too: among 26 dogs entering re-homing kennels, mean urinary cortisol:creatinine tended to decrease with time in the strays and returns and to increase in dogs relinquished from homes, though the authors cautioned the ratio is not yet an established welfare indicator in this species [4].

Three months in: what improves, and what surfaces

Owners of dogs adopted from five Ohio shelters were surveyed at 7, 30, 90 and 180 days: 99 completed the 7-day questionnaire, 75 the 90-day and 83 the 180-day. By 90 days, five measures had significantly increased — stranger-directed aggression, excitability and chasing (each P < 0.001), training difficulty (P = 0.001) and touch sensitivity (P = 0.002) — while separation-related behaviours, attachment and attention-seeking decreased by 180 days [5]. Still, 75% of owners said overall behaviour had improved by 180 days [5].

That is the opposite of "three months and they're themselves." Some behaviours fade; others appear only once the dog is confident enough to show them, so the quiet dog of week one is not your baseline. Hold direction, not the calendar: fear that loosens week by week is adaptation, while fear that escalates needs a veterinary behaviour assessment — see dog anxiety symptoms and, after dark, night-time anxiety.

When to See a Vet

  • No food for more than 24 hours, or no water for 12 — stress can blunt appetite, but a full day of refusal in a dog fresh out of a shelter needs examining.
  • Diarrhoea with blood, vomiting, or a dog who is flat, weak or hard to rouse — shelter dogs commonly carry parasites and enteric infections, and a thin dog dehydrates fast.
  • Cough with fever, thick nasal discharge, or loss of appetite — Merck calls kennel cough mild and self-limiting, but describes fever, purulent nasal discharge, depression, anorexia and a productive cough as indicative of bronchopneumonia [6].
  • Fear that is getting worse rather than better, or any growl, snap or bite — escalating fear is not decompression, and is easier treated early.

Is the 3-3-3 rule real?

It is a rescue-community rubric, not a research finding; no published study defines those boundaries. A 2023 Scientific Reports study found urinary cortisol significantly lower by day 7 and day 12 at home, with no three-week sampling point anywhere, and a 2023 PLOS ONE survey found several behaviours still rising at 90 days.

My new rescue dog will not eat. How long is too long?

A missed meal the first evening is common. More than 24 hours with no food, or refusal with vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or a painful belly, means being seen — appetite loss can be an early sign of kennel-acquired infection.

My dog is sleeping almost the entire day. Should I worry?

Judge by the rest of the picture, not hours asleep. A dog who wakes readily, eats, drinks, toilets normally and is bright when up is settling. One who is hard to rouse, wobbly, off food, vomiting or scouring needs a vet the same day — parvovirus, enteric infections, pneumonia and dehydration all look like a flat, sleepy new arrival. The published reassurance covers night-time rest only: a 2023 Scientific Reports study measured nocturnal activity over the first nights at home, not daytime sleep.

A cough started a week after we brought him home. Is that from the shelter?

Very possibly. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes the cough develops 5–10 days after exposure to affected dogs, calls kennel cough a mild, self-limiting disease, and says severity usually diminishes during the first 5 days though it persists for 10–20 days. It describes fever, purulent nasal discharge, depression, anorexia and a productive cough as indicative of bronchopneumonia — a same-day call.

He was perfect for a week and is now much harder. Is that normal?

Yes, and documented. In a 2023 PLOS ONE cohort surveyed at 7, 30, 90 and 180 days — 99 owners responding at 7 days, 75 at 90, 83 at 180 — stranger-directed aggression, excitability, touch sensitivity, training difficulty and chasing all significantly increased by 90 days, while separation-related and attention-seeking behaviours decreased by 180.
